Since the inception of the program, Pieces of Home projects have been primarily supported by community groups and individuals surrounding the hospitals. Most often, a group of children, teens, or adults will work together to raise money then use the money for a large scale shopping trip. In some cases, the backpacks and fillers are then delivered to the hospital to be filled by program volunteers. Other groups have held stuffing events to fill the packs prior to donation. Some groups have designated individuals or families to fill a complete bag for a specific age and gender. Many youth groups have held drives for new items and backpacks, then filled them for drop-off. Any and all of these formats work well.
We recommend checking with the coordinator of the site you wish to support prior to beginning a drive. At a given time, some hospitals may be running low on infant or teen bags, others may be looking specifically for socks and underwear. In the past, we have received large numbers of dental hygiene products from a donor, books from another. Donors do not need to give a fully stuffed bag to be helpful and appreciated. Supplemental materials are always needed and will be utilized.
